Making Life Easier with Walking Aids
February 18, 2026 · 5 min read

Walking aids are some of the simplest products we sell — and some of the most life-changing. The right cane, walker or rollator can give you back the confidence to go out, stay social and keep moving. Here's how to choose well.
Canes — light support and balance
A cane is best when you have mild balance issues or one weaker side. Folding canes are great for travel; quad canes give a wider base for extra stability. Always set the handle to your wrist height when you stand with your arms relaxed.
Walkers — solid two-handed support
A traditional walker (no wheels) is the most stable option and is often recommended after surgery. You lift it forward with each step, which is slower but gives maximum support. Two-wheeled walkers are a middle ground — easier to push, still very steady.
Rollators — freedom for everyday outings
Four-wheeled rollators are the most popular walking aid we sell, and for good reason: they roll easily, brake under control, fold for the car, and almost all come with a padded seat for when you need a rest. They're brilliant for the shops, the park or a longer outing.
Small things that make a big difference
- •Get the handle height right — wrist height with arms relaxed
- •Check the tyres for outdoor use; soft tyres roll smoothly over footpath cracks
- •A bag or basket means you don't have to carry shopping
- •Hand-loop brakes are easier on arthritic hands than squeeze brakes
