Choosing a Mobility Scooter: A Practical Guide
March 28, 2026 · 7 min read

A mobility scooter can completely change how you experience the world — but only if it suits how and where you'll use it. Before you fall in love with a model, work through these four questions.
1. Where will you ride it?
Footpaths, the local shopping centre, country roads, the caravan park? Smaller 3-wheel scooters turn beautifully indoors but feel less stable on rough ground. Mid-size 4-wheel scooters are the all-rounder for footpaths and shops. Full road-rated scooters travel further and faster but need to be stored under cover.
2. How will you transport it?
If you need to lift it into a car boot, a folding lithium travel scooter is the answer — many weigh under 25 kg and are airline-approved. If it lives at home, weight and folding aren't important and you can prioritise comfort and range.
3. Range, speed and comfort
- •Range: How far on a single charge? Add a buffer of 30% for hills and headwinds.
- •Speed: 6 km/h is footpath legal everywhere. 10 km/h opens up longer trips.
- •Suspension and seat: Captain's seats and full suspension matter for daily riders.
- •Basket and cane holder: Small details that make daily errands easier.
4. After-sales support
Scooters need batteries, tyres and the occasional service. Buy from a supplier who can support you for years — not just sell you a box. We carry parts for everything we sell and can arrange local service across Australia.
